Everything people ask about North Sydney — the dining and after-work bars, Luna Park and the harbour, shopping, getting here and parking, and how this directory works.
Eating, drinking & coffee
What is North Sydney known for?
A major business district and harbourside village on the Lower North Shore, just north of the Harbour Bridge — known for its office towers, a busy after-work dining and bar scene, Luna Park, the harbour pool and the foreshore.
Where's the best dining?
Around Mount, Miller and Walker Streets and Greenwood Plaza — bistros, Japanese, Italian and Thai alongside historic pubs. Book for weekend dinner. See the Eat & Drink guide.
Where are the best after-work bars?
The Greenwood Hotel and The Rag & Famish are the favourites, packed from 5pm on weekdays, plus the bars around Greenwood Plaza and Mount Street.
Where can I get coffee or lunch?
The cafés around the Mount Street plaza and the laneways feed the office crowd every weekday — go just before or after the midday rush.
Where do office workers go for a quick weekday lunch?
The Greenwood Plaza food court, the Mount Street plaza cafés and the casual spots along Miller and Walker Streets turn over fast from noon to 2pm — sushi, salads, banh mi and dumplings. Go early or late to skip the queue. See the Eat & Drink guide.

Is Luna Park free to enter?

What are Luna Park's opening hours and how do ride passes work?

Getting here & around
How do I get to North Sydney?
One stop over the Bridge from the city. North Sydney and Milsons Point stations serve the area, buses run along the Pacific Highway and Miller Street, and ferries call at Milsons Point and McMahons Point.
Is there parking?
Commercial car parks at Greenwood Plaza and around the CBD plus metered street parking; busy on weekdays and can be pricey. The train and ferry make a car-free trip easy.
How much does parking cost, and where's it cheapest?
Greenwood Plaza and the CBD car parks charge premium weekday rates but often have cheaper early-bird, evening and weekend deals; street meters are limited and time-restricted. Beat the early-bird cut-off, or just take the train or ferry instead.
Ferry or train to the city — which is better?
The train from North Sydney is fastest, just minutes over the Bridge. The ferry from Milsons Point or McMahons Point takes longer but gives you a scenic harbour ride to Circular Quay — the nicer choice for sightseeing. Both use Opal.
Where should I stay?
Several hotels near the station and Milsons Point, well placed for the harbour, Luna Park and a quick trip over the Bridge. See Stay & Explore.

Are there gyms and fitness studios in North Sydney?
Plenty — the CBD has large gyms plus boutique reformer pilates, yoga and spin studios geared to the office crowd before work, at lunch and after 5pm, with runners using the foreshore paths around Lavender Bay and Bradfield Park. See Services.
